Soapstone Heart Dishes
These beautiful soapstone heart-shaped dishes are handmade and hand-dyed in Kenya. Each is a different color and is etched with inspiring words (color is specific to words). Soapstone, also known as kisii stone, is mined from great pits in Kenya and carved into sculptures. The craftspeople smooth the rough edges with sandpaper dipped in water and polish the pieces to a high gloss or paint them with etched accents.
As Fair Trade Certified items they benefit the artists who make them. Most of the artists use the money for basic necessities like food for their families and school fees for their children. While the money is usually a survival tool, some of them are able to use some of the money to provide for HIV orphans. Every dollar makes an impact: in a country like Zimbabwe, where unemployment is so high, it typically takes only one person with a job to provide for an entire extended family.
These little dishes are great for holding change, keys, jewelry, or inspirational tokens.
Why We Love These Soapstone Hearts: It's hard work to carve and wet-sand a soapstone object and we appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into every piece. A purchase of one of these hearts helps to support the people of Kenya, a country much in need of our help. We love that each heart is unique in its own way - a symbol of the person who made it - which gives us a feeling of closeness to such a distant place.
